October is Lusaka at its most extreme: the hottest month of the year, and the one when the jacarandas turn the older suburbs violet. Plan your days around the heat and it is one of the best times to see the city.

What's the weather like in Lusaka in October?

October sits at the end of the hot dry season. Days are hot and dry, humidity builds towards the end of the month, and the first storms can arrive in late October or November. According to official meteorological normals recorded across monitoring stations in Zambia, the national average high is 33°C (92°F) and the average low is 18°C (64°F).

Plan your day around the heat

  • Mornings: walking, markets and outdoor sights.

  • Midday: indoors — museums, galleries, a long lunch.

  • Late afternoon and evening: outdoor dining and sundowners.

Jacaranda season

The bloom usually peaks in early to mid October, transforming Lusaka’s streets into vibrant corridors of purple. Key locations like Addis Ababa Drive and Independence Avenue feature impressive canopies set against wide boulevards, while quieter residential avenues—such as Njoka Road in Olympia Park and the appropriately named Jacaranda Road near Kabwata—offer charming, tree-lined views perfect for taking in the full seasonal color.
