• Best Providers & Coverage: MTN and Airtel are the leading network operators, offering the most reliable 4G (and growing 5G) coverage in Lusaka, Livingstone, and major towns. Zamtel is a third option, but its coverage footprint is generally smaller.

• Mobile Money is King: Setting up MTN MoMo or Airtel Money with your new SIM is incredibly useful. Mobile money functions like a digital wallet and is widely accepted—even preferred—for paying for taxis (like the Yango app), groceries, market souvenirs, and restaurant bills.

• Mandatory Registration: By law, all SIM cards in Zambia must be registered. Always purchase your SIM at an official provider kiosk (available at international airports and major shopping malls) and bring your passport, as they will need to scan it to activate the line. Avoid buying pre-registered SIMs from unofficial vendors, as these are often deactivated by the networks.

• Easy Top-Ups: Recharging your airtime or data bundles is incredibly accessible. You can buy top-up scratch cards at supermarkets, petrol stations, and from licensed street vendors wearing the network's branded neon vests.

• eSIM Alternative: If your phone is unlocked and eSIM-compatible, purchasing a travel eSIM (like Airalo, Saily or Holafly) before departure is a great way to have instant data the moment you land. However, note that travel eSIMs are usually data-only and will not give you a local number to register for Zambian mobile money services.
